"Freaky
Friday" is based on an original book of the same title by Mary Rogers
and was first made into a movie in 1977 (Jodi Foster was the daughter).
Either of these choices might be more enjoyable options than this latest, updated
version. Despite the rumors that some people thought that Jamie Lee Curtis
should have been considered for an Oscar (she wasn't), this offering is
pretty "lame". Disney films for pre-teen and adolescent
audiences continue to present "typical" families as consisting of a blatantly
obnoxious, overly sexually curious young brother, a doddering
grandparent and an out of control lazy/screaming/bad attitude teenager who would make anyone reconsider parenting.
The
creative idea of a child and parent switching minds and thereby gaining insight
into what the other must deal with on a daily basis is definitely a fun
premise. This rendition contains just too much teen age tantrums, eye rolling and
parent bashing to make the love bond connection between mother and
daughter (that we know will ultimately happen
in the end) simply not worth your time for trip.
