Hocus Pocus

1 Angel

This 1993 Walt Disney Halloween movie starring Bette Midler, Sara Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy might be just the ticket to make your children scream with fright and delight. Despite the Disney label it definitely has it's scarier moments which could be too intense for young children and there are occasions of mild inappropriate language. There is a zombie with sewn lips (who also looses his head), a Salem witch hunt which doesn't end well for the witches and children in peril. However, as many Halloween movies for children go, this one has a lot of humor that you may decide to let your older children enjoy for the holiday. With parent's dancing to rocking music, silly and scary witches, a talking cat and children saving the day this film does have much to offer.

Appropriate Age Range: 7 to adult

Please Remember: Discuss the movie with them afterward! It is important to watch the show with them, at least the first time. This should not be considered a luxury option unless you are absolutely positive that you completely and wholeheartedly approve of all of the content contained in the viewing experience!

Regardless, it is crucial that you at least talk with them about what they thought about what they just saw:

bullet What did they like the most?
bullet What about that did they enjoy?
bullet Was there anything they didn't like?
bullet What was it about that part that had them feel that way?
bulletWho were your favorite characters, and why?

The discussion can be as important or often more valuable experience than the movie itself! Do not loose the opportunity to teach your values, clarify their uncertainties or explain what they saw. This helps them develop their own reasoning skills. This returns control to your own household, teaches what your family values and reduces the power that media has to influence your children. And after all, isn't this what we want for our children?
